The City of madison parks killed 113 geese in 2026

In the summer of 2026, the City of Madison paid the USDA $3,500 to capture and kill 113 Canada geese.

There’s a misconception that killing geese is necessary to manage conflicts between people and wildlife. It isn’t.

Communities can use humane, nonlethal approaches including habitat modification, egg addling, public education and other long-term strategies to reduce conflicts without killing healthy animals.

Madison has expanded some nonlethal methods over the years. But killing geese remains part of the City's approach — and this year, 113 geese lost their lives.

This needs to change.

Madison Parks is a City agency, and its work is funded with public money. If you live in Madison — or simply care about how wildlife is treated in our community — please respectfully tell City officials that you want Madison to commit to humane, nonlethal goose management.
